A group of US Democratic lawmakers, including four senators and a House member, will be arriving in Kathmandu on Friday.
According to The Hill, an American news site, Senator Mark Kelly announced the trip.
Other senators making the trip with Kelly are Kirsten Gillibrand, Cory Booker, Ed Markey along with Representative Mondaire Jones, the lone House member, said The Hill.
They are on a nine-day trip to Poland, Germany, India, the United Arab Emirates and Nepal to “rally support for Ukraine.”
Diplomatic and government sources in Kathmandu confirmed the trip.
“We have received a communication that a US delegation is visiting Nepal soon,” said Sewa Lamsal, spokesperson for Nepal’s Foreign Ministry.
The visit comes on the heels of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba’s recent visit to India, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s trip to Nepal, ratification of the $500 million Millenium Challenge Corporation Nepal Compact by Nepali parliament and Nepal’s voting in favor of Ukraine in several UN platforms in New York and Geneva.
The congressional visit is seen as preparing ground for some high-level exchanges between Nepal and the US later this year as both sides are marking 75 years of establishment of diplomatic ties.
The group of lawmakers is the latest of multiple US congressional delegations who have travelled mostly to Europe since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
