Nepal’s Covid-19 death toll climbed to 636 on Sunday with a record 22 Covid-19-related deaths, the highest single-day fatality. The country also reported 2,071 new infections taking the national coronavirus tally to 107,755.

Seventeen men and five women died of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry.

Among the dead were four men and a woman, aged 60, 70, 75 and 83 and 66 years respectively, from Kathmandu; a 49-year-old man from Lalitpur; and two men, aged 44 and 57 years, from Bhaktapur.

Two men, aged 47 and 98 years, a third man, whose age could not be ascertained, and a 75-year-old woman died in Chitwan while a 77-year-old man from Nuwakot and a 85-year-old woman from Makwanpur also died due to Covid-19-related complications.

Similarly, three men, aged 60, 61 and 84, from Rupandehi; a 65-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman from Sunsari; a 61-year-old woman from Dhankuta; a 38-year-old man from Sarlahi; and a 63-year-old man from Sindhupalchok also succumbed to the disease.

So far, 75,804 individuals have made successful recovery—1,552 of them in the past 24 hours. As of Sunday, there are 31,315 active cases.

According to the ministry, the Kathmandu Valley recorded 1,416 new infections. Of them, 1,145 were confirmed in Kathmandu, 161 in Lalitpur and 110 in Bhaktapur.

As of Sunday, the number of cases in the Valley has reached 41,786. A total of 39,288 cases have been detected after the three district administration offices in Kathmandu Valley imposed prohibitory orders on August 19.

The country has seen 89,761 infections and 596 deaths since July 22. There were 17,994 cases and 40 Covid-19-related deaths until July 21, when the government decided to end the nationwide lockdown after four months.

According to the ministry, 269 individuals from Bagmati Province, 139 from Province 2, 98 from Lumbini Province, 78 from Province 1, 30 from Gandaki Province, 15 from Sudurpaschim Province, and seven from Karnali Province have died of Covid-19 so far.

As of Sunday, 1,176,984 PCR tests have been carried out across the country.

“A total of 12,427 PCR tests were performed in the past 24 hours,” Dr Jageshwar Gautam, spokesperson for the ministry, said during a regular press briefing.

In the past 24 hours, 1,145 individuals from Kathmandu, 161 from Lalitpur, 110 from Bhaktapur, 104 from Bardiya, 98 from Rupandehi, 36 each from Baglung and Kailali, 34 from Arghakhanchi, 32 from Dang, 28 from Saptari, 25 from Nuwakot, 24 from Kaski, 20 each from Gorkha and Banke, 17 from Kanchanpur, 13 each from Mahottari and Nawalparasi (West), 12 from Udayapur, 11 from Bara, 10 each from Kapilvastu and Doti, tested positive for the coronavirus infection.

Infections were also recorded in nine people each in Lamjung, Dailekh and Rukum (West), seven in Siraha, six in Dhading, five in Makwanpur, four each in Rautahat, Kavrepalanchok, Ramechhap, Sindhupalchok and Gulmi, three each in Morang, Sarlahi, Chitwan, Dolakha, Nawalparasi (East), Pyuthan and Dolpa districts.

Likewise, two persons each Dhanusa, Syangja, Palpa, Rukum (East), Kalikot, Salyan, Surkhet and Baitadi and one each in Okhaldhunga, Jhapa, Solukhumbu, Parsa, Tanahun, Parbat, Rolpa, Jumla, Achham and Darchula, also tested positive for the virus.

“Eight districts—Morang, Sunsari, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Chitwan, Rupandehi and Surkhet—have more than 500 active cases,” Gautam said. “Two districts—Manang and Mustang—don’t have any active cases.”

“As of Sunday, 329 Covid-19 patients are being treated in intensive care units across the country and 76 patients—55 in Bagmati, 10 in Province 1, nine in Lumbini and two in Province 2—are on ventilator support.”

Nepal on Saturday reported 5,008 new coronavirus infections, the highest single-day surge, and 14 deaths. The country had reported 2,059 new cases and 10 deaths on Friday.
