Nepal’s Covid-19 toll reaches 535 with seven more deaths; 2,253 new infections take national tally to 86,823

Nepal on Sunday reported 2,253 new Covid-19 cases as the national tally reached 86823. The country also reported seven deaths, pushing the coronavirus death toll to 535.
Three women, three men and a five-day-old infant died of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry.
A 25-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man from Banke, a 55-year-old woman from Chitwan, 29, from Chitwan and Kanchapur respectively. Likewise, two men, a 55-year-old from Kathmandu and a 77-year-old from Lalitpur also succumbed to the disease.
So far, 64,069 individuals have made successful recovery—1,329 of them in the past 24 hours. As of Sunday, there are 22,219 active cases.
According to the ministry, the Kathmandu Valley recorded 1,599 new infections. Of them, 1,373 were confirmed in Kathmandu, 187 in Lalitpur and 39 in Bhaktapur.
As of Sunday, the number of cases in the Valley has reached 29,517. A total of 27,019 cases have been detected after the three district administration offices in Kathmandu Valley imposed prohibitory orders starting August 19 midnight.
The country has seen 68,829 infections and 495 deaths since July 22. There were 17,994 cases and 40 Covid-19-related deaths until July 21, when the government decided to end the nationwide lockdown after four months.
According to the ministry, 208 individuals from Bagmati Province, 131 from Province 2, 88 from Province 5, 61 from Province 1, 26 from Gandaki Province, 15 from Sudurpaschim Province, and six from Karnali Province have died of Covid-19 so far.
As of Sunday, the 1,074,448 PCR tests have been carried out across the country.
“A total of 12,784 PCR tests were performed in the past 24 hours,” Dr Jageshwar Gautam, spokesperson for the ministry, said during a regular press briefing.
In the past 24 hours, 1,373 individuals from Kathmandu, 187 from Lalitpur, 81 from Morang, 55 from Kailali, 54 from Surkhet, 52 each from Chitwan and Rupandehi, 50 from Banke, 40 from Nawalparasi (East), 39 from Bhaktapur, 22 from Makwanpur, 21 from Kanchanpur, 19 from Tanahun, 16 from Jhapa, 15 from Palpa, 14 from Nuwakot, 13 from Bardiya and 10 from Kavrepalanchok, tested positive for the coronavirus infection.
Infections were also recorded in nine people each in Dhanusa and Dang, eight each in Sunsari, Parsa, Dhading, Sindhupalchok and Dailekh, seven each in Bara, Siraha and Lamjung, six in Sarlahi, five each in Rautahat and Pyuthan, four each in Kaski, Syangja, Kapilvastu and Gulmi districts.
Likewise, three persons each in Khotang, Saptari and Baglung, two each in Udayapur, Dolakha, Rasuwa, Ramechhap, Rukum (West) and Salyan, and one each in Bhojpur, Sankhuwasabha, Mahottari, Nawalparasi (West), Kalikot, Dadeldhura, Bajhang and Baitadi, also tested positive for the virus.
“Seven districts—Morang, Siraha, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Chitwan and Rupandehi—have more than 500 active cases,” Gautam said. “Three districts—Manang, Mustang and Dolpa—don’t have any active cases.”
“As of Sunday, 226 Covid-19 patients are being treated in intensive care units across the country and 34 patients—27 in Bagmati, six in Province 5 and one in Province 1—are on ventilator support.”
