With two more deaths testing positive for Covid-19, Nepal’s death toll attributed to the coronavirus has risen to eight.

According to the Health Ministry, a 35-year-old man from Dullu Municipality in Dailekh who died on Saturday tested positive for Covid-19. The man was quarantined at the Nepal Electricity Authority building in the district.

Likewise, a two-year-old girl from Bajura who died early Sunday morning tested positive for Covid-19. The girl had returned to Nepal from India with her parents eight days ago and had been hospitalised on Thursday for high fever, respiratory problems and diarrhea.

“Samples from both deceased tested positive in polymerase chain reaction tests,” Dr Bikash Devkota, spokesperson for the Health Ministry, said at a regular press briefing on Sunday. “We are testing samples from additional three deceased, including one from a private hospital, in Kathmandu.”

An additional 166 infections were identified on Sunday, pushing the total number of cases to 1,567 with eight deaths.

“Samples of 29 individuals from Rautahat, 25 from Salyan, 21 from Dhanusa, 18 each from Kalikot and Dailekh, 12 from Saptari, 10 from Sarlahi, eight from Banke, five each from Kapilvastu and Parsa, four from Jhapa, three each from Kailali and Bajura, two from Syangja, and one each from Tanahun and Morang tested positive for the virus in various laboratories across the country,” said Devkota.

On Saturday, Nepal reported 189 new Covid-19 cases, the highest in a single day. Nepal had reported its sixth Covid-19 death and 170 new cases on Friday, with 156 new cases confirmed on Thursday and 114 cases on Wednesday.

According to the Health Ministry, the coronavirus infection has so far been reported in 57 districts.

Kapilvastu has so far reported 274 cases, the highest for a district, followed by Rautahat with 217 cases while Banke has reported 189 cases.

Similarly, 111 cases have been reported in Jhapa and Parsa has recorded 107 cases.

“So far, 69,582 polymerase chain reaction tests and 111,109 rapid diagnostic tests have been carried out across the country,” said Devkota.

Meanwhile, 220 patients from across the country have recovered, according to Devkota.
